FAQ
// What is this?
Welcome to Fate/Retribution Promenade, a short-term pvp (occasionally pve) jamjar based on Fate/Stay Night and its many… many... continuations and sequels and prequels and spin-offs. The basic premise is that seven Masters will be partnered with seven Servants and they’ll fight each other for the right to win the coveted Holy Grail, a magical wish-granting vessel that will only appear when one Servant is left standing. Characters will be assigned the role of either a Master or a Servant upon their application acceptance and will additionally be partnered with another character who fills the other role. They’ll need to work together to claim victory–or, at the very least, survive.
The game will be aiming to run for approximately two months unless you bloodthirsty savages murder each other faster.
// What if I don’t know a damned thing about Fate/?
We’ve got you covered. Please look here to learn wtf is going on! Though if you have questions regarding a mechanic or the lore (for the sake of everyone, we won’t be diving too deep here), you may also feel free to ask them in this post.
// Is this an AU game?
Nope! It’s a jamjar, so there’s no need to AU your character into Fate/. Knowledge of the premise and the abilities at the characters’ disposal will be imparted to the characters ICly to avoid confusion, so you guys can get right down to fighting.
// Where is this taking place?
A mysterious city?? Somewhere??? Wherever it is, the locals don’t seem surprised to hear that you’ve never actually heard of it before. All you know is that it’s called Evrance and you won’t be able to just skip town when the going gets tough. For some reason, you can’t seem to just. Exit. As in, you have no idea where to exit. Weird! Check out the setting for more details.
Fights will take place in the city and property damage (and possible civilian casualties) might happen quite often. Maybe try to time them so it’s not during rush hour traffic or during an elementary school field trip, but if you want to cause problems on purpose, hey! You do you.
// How did my character get here?
For Masters, a representative of the Church (who acts as the neutral arbiter of the Holy Grail War) would have appeared to them in some manner – in a dream? A chance meeting on the street? A phishing email? Up to you! – to explain to them the concept of the Holy Grail War and offer the chance to participate so that they may have a wish granted if they win. The Church has arranged for some kind of cross-dimensional travel to the city.
For Servants, they would have accepted a magical summons from a Master that called them forth out of their canon and into the city to participate in the Holy Grail War. This summons will have granted them the knowledge about the Holy Grail War and their role in it, and the possibility of having a wish granted upon victory.
// How do these fights work?
You’re allowed to initiate one challenge a week, through a proposal that will be due by Tuesday 11:59 PM ET. Proposals can be submitted here. Once the nature of the proposal has been determined, the mods will create a chat for the appropriate parties and roll dice to determine the outcome. Certain factors, such as Servant class advantage or disadvantage, skills used, or Command Spells used, among other possible things, will be added to the roll as modifiers. Combatants can decide if they’d like a log to play out the fight or not.
// What happens if I lose?
If you’re a Servant, you’ll die! Perhaps something might happen after that. If you’re a Master, you might die or you might be spared, depending on how lenient the victor is feeling, but you’ll be disqualified from the Holy Grail War either way. So you could either become a bystander or a body! Wow!
// Can I do other things besides fight?
Of course! You can only choose to pick a fight once a week, but you’ll get one additional non-combat proposal to use as you please. You can do an Alliance proposal, in which you can reach out to another Servant-Master pair to try and work together, defensively or offensively, for the time being. You can do a Reconnaissance proposal, in which you can ask a mod for information regarding the war, a Servant, or something you can use to your advantage. Results will depend on a dice roll but will serve as positive modifiers or a helpful item in the future. Or you can do a Defense proposal if you feel you might be in danger this week, which will give you a positive modifier if you’re attacked by another pair.
Additionally, there will be “events” occurring every other week. They may be serious, they may be stupid, we’re not telling. Otherwise, mingling is always an option!
// What kind of character can I play?
Believe me when I say the sky’s the limit. There have been Masters that were dogs or toddlers and let’s not even get started on the wide range of Servants. You can also play a character from the Fate/ canon! For the sake of ease, please bring someone who has a wish that they are willing to fight and/or kill others for. Because this is not a game where everyone gets to live! Whoops!
(Also, if you’re going to do mana transfers, please do not be a child or a dog.)
// Are canon powers on?
… Ish! Servants will gain access to three skills based on existing canon abilities, which can each be used only once over the course of the game, as well as a Noble Phantasm, their most powerful attack (also only able to be used once). Masters will be able to keep their canon abilities, unless it’s going to break the world. However, no one ability is going to be stronger than the other. If Sephiroth is going to use Supernova, surprise! Hinata from Haikyuu can also hit a volleyball with that much power!
Masters will also be given three Command Spells, which will allow them to give their Servants three absolute commands that must be obeyed. They can be used as a buff, to summon a Servant to their side, to get a rebellious Servant to follow an order, etc. They can only be used once and must be cleared through a mod first, as well as be agreed upon by both players.
// Is there a cast cap?
There is a cast cap of two! There are only fourteen players, I’d like to avoid a predominating canon at all costs.
// Can I choose my role?
For the sake of fairness, I will be asking you to make a case for your character being either a Master or a Servant (with 2-3 possible choices of class) in your application. In short, please explain how they would fare in either role. Please also state your preference in the application; I’ll try to take it into consideration, though it comes down to how things skew across the board. I will be making the final choice as to whether your character is a Servant or a Master.
// Can I choose my partner?
You can state in your application if there is anyone you absolutely do not wish to partner with, but otherwise no, I will be assigning partners. Time zones and other factors will be taken into account to the best of my ability. But otherwise I’m here to encourage chaos, as ever. Good luck, newly established partners!
