WTF IS FATE?

// NO, SERIOUSLY, WTF IS FATE?
Do you want the long version or do you want the short version?

// WHAT’S THE SHORT VERSION?
We’re so glad you asked! The Fate/ series largely centers around the Holy Grail War, wherein mages summon spirits both from Earth’s proper history and mythology to participate in a battle royale where the last team standing can claim the Holy Grail, a vessel that can grant any wish.

The mages are known as Masters, and the spirits summoned are then sorted into one of seven Servant classes. Servants are commonly known as their Class Name, as the revelation of their True Name will give opponents an advantage. Therefore, the True Name is kept a secret between Master and Servant, and is only revealed when the Servant uses certain, powerful abilities. (OOCly, everyone will know who is what class, while ICly only Masters will know the True Name of their own Servants. Please keep the boundaries between IC and OOC knowledge in-tact!)

Overseeing this clash as a neutral arbitrator and upholder of the rules is the Church. The Church itself is neutral ground and the Father is there to (allegedly) assist when needed.

Below is a breakdown of Masters, Servants, and the abilities afforded to them.

[ ABOUT MASTERS ] Masters are typically mages, though not always. Some people train their whole lives for the role, some people stumble right into it. Whatever the reason, a Master is responsible for providing mana, or spiritual energy, to their Servant. Like a magical battery. Without this tether to reality, a Servant cannot exist in the real world.

Masters will not get a magical information download about the world like Servants will, unfortunately, though a representative of the Church will be there to greet them upon their arrival and explain the finer mechanics of the Holy Grail War and their bond with their Servant. Sorry friends, you’ll have to rely on your partner to explain “pogchamp”.

In addition to any canon abilities a Master has, they are given the following powers:
COMMAND SEALS: A set of three crimson symbols set on the back of their hand, which allow up to three absolute commands to be issued to the Servant. Servants are unable to disobey, although if the order goes directly against the Servant’s will, two or more commands may have to be issued.

Command Spells can range from buffing the Servant’s abilities to ordering them to Unalive themselves if threatened and anything in-between. Once a Command Spell is used, the mark will fade off the hand.

Masters, beware. Your hand can be removed and the right to control your Servant will then belong to the attacker.

MANA TRANSFER: In order to use the extent of their abilities, Servants will require mana. If mana is low or more is required, a mana transfer can be performed. This requires the swapping of bodily fluids, such as kissing or other more intimate acts. Did we mention the original Fate was a visual novel? Ehe. (Please take any spicy mana transfers off-comm.)

[ ABOUT SERVANTS ] In canon, Servants are spirits of figures from history, myth, and legend summoned to the real world and slotted into one of seven classes. For the purposes of this game, Servants will have been summoned from their respective canons instead. As a part of their summoning, Servants are granted the knowledge about the Holy Grail War and the world they have been summoned to in order to help them blend in and function in day-to-day life. Any Ye Olds will know how to work a cell phone, how to drive a car, and what a meme is. You’re welcome.

Servants are stronger, faster, more durable, and overall more powerful than a normal human being, though they can of course still be injured and killed.

A Servant’s canon abilities will be reworked into three servant “skills”. For example, Fate/Stay Night’s Rider has the skill Mystic Eyes, which can cause paralysis (due to her nature as Medusa). On top of that, Servants have the following abilities:
INVISIBILITY: How the hell else are you supposed to spy on each other?

TELEPATHY WITH MASTER: The easiest way to communicate without someone reading your lips or just hearing you.

NOBLE PHANTASM: A Servant’s most powerful ability, usually closely tied to their legend or past. Requires a lot of mana and is often a dead giveaway to their true identity. Note: this can only be used once over the course of the game, so choose wisely.

[ SERVANT CLASSES ] A Servant’s class is usually based on their existing fighting style, weapon preference, or some element of their backstory. But also, sometimes it ain’t that deep. If you wanna be an Archer with a water gun, we’re not gonna fucking stop you.

Much like a game of rock, paper, scissors, the Servant classes have certain strengths and weaknesses when facing off against one another. These will translate to modifiers for your dice rolls when engaging in a fight.

// OKAY, I’M SCARED TO ASK, BUT WHAT’S THE LONG VERSION?
Well, if you’ve got half an hour to kill, it’s explained very nicely in this YouTube video.

(We joke but the video is highly recommended for a deeper understanding of the series concept and timeline as a whole. Also, it’s hilarious.)
